Ingredients

1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, pressed and cubed

3 tablespoons cornstarch

3 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey

1 teaspoon sesame oil

2 cups cooked brown rice or quinoa

1 cup broccoli florets

1 carrot, julienned

1 red bell pepper, sliced

1 avocado, sliced

2 green onions, chopped

Sesame seeds for garnish

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prep the Tofu: Start by pressing the tofu for at least 30 minutes to remove excess moisture; this step is crucial for achieving crispy tofu. After pressing, cut the tofu into uniform bite-sized cubes and transfer them to a mixing bowl.

Coat the Tofu: Evenly sprinkle the cornstarch over the tofu cubes. Gently toss the tofu until all pieces are fully coated in cornstarch, which will contribute to the crispy texture when frying.

Pan-Fry the Tofu: In a large non-stick skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. When the oil is shimmering, carefully add the tofu cubes in a single layer without overcrowding. Fry for approximately 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Once done, remove the tofu from the skillet and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.

Make the Garlic Sauce: In the same skillet (discard any excess oil if needed), add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until it becomes fragrant. Lower the heat slightly, and add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup (or honey), and sesame oil. Stir the mixture well and let it simmer for about 1 to 2 minutes to meld the flavors together.

Combine Tofu with Sauce: Return the crispy tofu to the skillet, gently tossing it in the garlic sauce until well-coated. Allow it to cook for an additional minute to absorb the flavors, then season with salt and pepper to your liking.

Prepare the Bowls: Start assembling your bowls by spooning a generous layer of cooked brown rice or quinoa into each serving bowl. Top the rice or quinoa with the sautéed tofu. Next, elegantly arrange the broccoli florets, julienned carrot, sliced red bell pepper, and avocado on top for a colorful presentation.

Garnish: Finish the bowls by sprinkling the chopped green onions and sesame seeds over the top for an added burst of flavor and visual appeal.

Serve: Enjoy your delicious and nutritious Crispy Garlic Tofu Bowls warm, made for sharing with friends and family or for a delightful solo meal!
